An Exotronic pre-wired battery box open, showing the Victron Orion XS, SmartSolar 75/15 and SmartShunt wired inside

Exotronic pre-wired battery boxes: Victron charging in a box you can carry

Short answer: these are portable battery boxes with Victron charging built in: an Orion XS DC-DC charger for the alternator, a SmartSolar 75/15 for a solar panel, and a SmartShunt to keep count, wired to a panel of Anderson, 12V and USB outlets. You can get one empty for your own battery, or with a 100Ah or 180Ah Exotronic lithium already in it. They suit a 4WD, ute or camper trailer that wants a self-contained setup you can lift in and out. They don't suit a big system: the solar side is small.

What's in the box?

From Exotronic:

  • Victron Orion XS 50 A DC-DC charger. Exotronic ship it set to a maximum of 35 A, and say it can be set higher or lower depending on the hottest ambient temperature it'll see. A blue 50 A Anderson plug connects the start battery (a spare blue plug is included).
  • Victron SmartSolar MPPT 75/15. A red 50 A Anderson plug for the panel, max 75 V DC (spare red plug included). Victron rate the 75/15 at 220 W of panel nominal on 12 V, so this suits one decent panel or a folding panel, not a roof full. Our solar guide explains the numbers.
  • Victron SmartShunt 300 A, read on your phone over Bluetooth.
  • Outlets: two grey 50 A Andersons (fridge, DC gear), one grey 175 A Anderson for high-current output, three 12V sockets, two USB-C and two QC3 USB.

No battery, 100Ah or 180Ah?

Version What's in it Weight (our listing) Price
No battery The box, wired, for your own battery 6 kg $1,099.95
100Ah Plus a 100Ah Alpha Series LiFePO4 (Exotronic don't say which model) 17 kg $1,574.95
180Ah Plus the Alpha 180Ah IP67 23 kg $2,084.95

All three are 415 x 235 x 340 mm (our listing; Exotronic's page doesn't give sizes). If you already have a good battery, the empty box makes sense. If you don't, compare the empty box plus a battery against the 100Ah or 180Ah versions; our lithium vs AGM guide helps with the battery side.

Who does it suit?

Good fit: a 4WD or ute with a fridge and lights, charging while you drive and from a folding panel at camp, where you want it all in one box you can move between vehicles.

Not such a good fit: anything with a big inverter or a roof full of solar. The 75/15 tops out at a small array, and the box isn't designed around a large inverter. For that, a board like the Noosa 50 Plus or a proper build is the better path.

The box vs buying the parts

Qty Part Our price each
1 Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A $424.95
1 Victron SmartSolar MPPT 75/15 $84.95
1 Victron SmartShunt 300A $93.95
The box with its outlets, internal wiring, assembly and testing not on our store on its own
Parts total (listed parts only) $603.85

The whole kit: Exotronic/Victron - 12V - SmartSolar + DC/DC + SmartShunt - Pre-Wired Battery Box - No Battery, $1,099.95.

The difference is the box and its outlet panel, the internal wiring and fusing, and the assembly. If you'd rather put one together yourself, the three Victron units are linked above, and our DC-DC, solar or both guide and fusing guide cover the wiring side.
