Victron 4500W Isolation Transformer Auto: Complete Marine Electrical Safety
Connecting a boat to shore power brings two problems: galvanic corrosion and grounding safety. The Victron 4500W Auto 115/230V Isolation Transformer eliminates any electrical continuity between AC shore power and the boat. It is essential for safety and eliminates the need for galvanic isolators and polarity alarms.
Prevent Galvanic Corrosion and Protect Your Hull
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals in electrical contact are exposed to an electrically conducting fluid such as seawater or fresh water. Connecting the ground wire of the shore supply to the metal parts of the boat causes it, and it can occur on any boat as soon as a metal part such as the shaft and propeller is in the water. Galvanic corrosion quickly dissolves sacrificial anodes and attacks the shaft, propeller and other immersed metal parts.
The isolation transformer completely isolates the boat from the shore ground: shore power feeds the primary side of the transformer and the boat is connected to the secondary.
Ensure Critical Grounding Safety
Leaving the shore ground disconnected is extremely dangerous, because GFCIs will not work nor will a fuse blow in case of a short circuit to a metal part on the boat. By connecting all metal parts to the neutral output on the secondary side of the transformer, a GFCI will trip or a fuse will blow in case of a short circuit.
Automatic 115V or 230V Input Switching
This model automatically switches to 115V or 230V supply, depending on input voltage: a supply of 88V to 130V switches it to 115V, and a supply of 185V to 250V switches it to the 230V range. Note that the AC input voltage is raised by a 1:1.05 ratio at the AC output.
Built-In Soft Start
Soft start is a standard feature of Victron isolation transformers. It prevents the shore power fuse from blowing due to the inrush current of the transformer.
Key Features and Benefits
- Total Electrical Isolation: No electrical continuity between shore power and the boat.
- Corrosion Prevention: Stops the shore ground connection that causes galvanic corrosion.
- Enhanced Safety: GFCIs and fuses keep working on the boat side.
- Soft Start: Prevents shore power fuses blowing from transformer inrush current.
- Automatic Input Switching: Detects a 115V or 230V supply and switches by itself.
- Toroidal Transformer: Low noise and low weight, in an aluminium IP21 enclosure with an input circuit breaker.
Protect Your Investment Today
Victron recommends, for optimal safety, connecting the secondary neutral of the transformer to ground when the boat is out of the water. Fit the Victron 4500W Auto 115/230V Isolation Transformer for safe shore power wherever you dock.
