Victron 4500W Isolation Transformer: Complete Marine Electrical Safety
Connecting a boat to shore power brings two problems: galvanic corrosion and grounding safety. The Victron 4500W 115/230V Isolation Transformer eliminates any electrical continuity between AC shore power and the boat. It is essential for safety and eliminates the need for galvanic isolators and polarity alarms.
Prevent Galvanic Corrosion and Protect Your Hull
Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals in electrical contact are exposed to an electrically conducting fluid such as seawater or fresh water. Connecting the ground wire of the shore supply to the metal parts of the boat causes it, and it can occur on any boat as soon as a metal part such as the shaft and propeller is in the water. Galvanic corrosion quickly dissolves sacrificial anodes and attacks the shaft, propeller and other immersed metal parts.
The isolation transformer completely isolates the boat from the shore ground: shore power feeds the primary side of the transformer and the boat is connected to the secondary.
Ensure Critical Grounding Safety
Leaving the shore ground disconnected is extremely dangerous, because GFCIs will not work nor will a fuse blow in case of a short circuit to a metal part on the boat. By connecting all metal parts to the neutral output on the secondary side of the transformer, a GFCI will trip or a fuse will blow in case of a short circuit.
115V or 230V, Set at Installation
The AC input and the AC output each need to be configured for 115V or 230V use, using the included jumper wires on the spade terminals above the input and output connectors. It can be used as a 115V to 115V, 230V to 230V, 115V to 230V or 230V to 115V isolation transformer.
Built-In Soft Start
Soft start is a standard feature of Victron isolation transformers. It prevents the shore power fuse from blowing due to the inrush current of the transformer.
Key Features and Benefits
- Total Electrical Isolation: No electrical continuity between shore power and the boat.
- Corrosion Prevention: Stops the shore ground connection that causes galvanic corrosion.
- Enhanced Safety: GFCIs and fuses keep working on the boat side.
- Soft Start: Prevents shore power fuses blowing from transformer inrush current.
- Flexible Voltage Handling: 115V or 230V input and output, set with jumper wires.
- Toroidal Transformer: Low noise and low weight, in an aluminium IP21 enclosure with an input circuit breaker.
Protect Your Investment Today
Victron recommends, for optimal safety, connecting the secondary neutral of the transformer to ground when the boat is out of the water. Fit the Victron 4500W 115/230V Isolation Transformer for safe shore power wherever you dock.
