Victron 8000W Isolation Transformer: Marine-Grade Galvanic Protection and Electrical Safety

Eliminate Shore Power Corrosion Risk with a Fan-Cooled Toroidal Isolation Transformer

The Victron 8000W Isolation Transformer (230V) completely separates a vessel's AC electrical system from the shore power supply, removing the direct electrical path that causes stray-current corrosion of underwater metals and unsafe earth faults. Shore power is fed to the transformer's primary side and the vessel's AC system connects to the secondary, so there is no electrical continuity between the two, eliminating the need for a separate galvanic isolator.

Rated for 8000W continuous at 35A output, the transformer uses a toroidal core for low noise, compact size and reduced weight compared with a laminated transformer of the same rating. A built-in soft start / inrush current limiter prevents the shore-side circuit breaker from tripping when the transformer is switched on, and the unit is fan-cooled, with the fan speed temperature-controlled and an overtemperature shutdown for protection.

Victron's isolation transformers convert the input voltage with a 1:1.05 ratio, boosting a 230V input to a 240V output to compensate for the voltage drop that is common over long shore power cable runs at marinas. The transformer works on 50Hz or 60Hz supplies but, like all Victron isolation transformers, cannot convert between the two frequencies.

Installation

The isolation transformer ships with a hanging bracket for mounting inside a vessel, plus earth-linking jumper wires: one to link the AC output neutral to earth (needed for a downstream GFCI/RCD to operate correctly), and one to bridge the AC input and output earths together when the vessel is out of the water for winter storage or maintenance. AC input and output cables need a minimum 6mm² (AWG10) cross-section, connecting via clearly marked L, N and PE screw terminals.
