Direct-Connect 65A Metering with Simple Ethernet Integration

The Victron EM24 Ethernet is a DIN-rail mounted, three-phase energy meter that measures the power and energy of a 3-phase circuit and reports it straight to a Victron GX device and the VRM Portal. Rated for direct connection up to 65A per phase with no current transformers required, it is a straightforward way to add grid, PV inverter, generator or AC load metering to an existing Victron GX-based system.

Unlike Victron's RS485-based meters, the EM24 Ethernet connects using a standard wired Ethernet connection to the local network, provided that network allows the GX device to reach it. This avoids running an RS485-to-USB interface cable between the distribution board and the GX device, which is useful where Ethernet infrastructure is already in place. Because it depends on the network being available, Victron notes that if the network fails, the system will switch to idle (passthrough) mode until communication is restored.

Once wired in, the meter is configured entirely from the GX device menu: set its Role (Grid meter, PV inverter, Generator, or AC load) and Phase type, and leave the front selector switch on the meter itself unlocked so the GX device can configure it automatically. The meter's own LCD display continues to show local kWh, kW and demand readings.

Single-Function, Three-Phase Design

The EM24 Ethernet is a single-function meter: it is assigned one role at a time across all three phases. Victron advises that installations needing to measure two different things at once, such as the grid on one phase and a single-phase PV inverter on another, should use the EM540 or ET340, or two single-phase meters, instead. For a single dedicated three-phase measurement point, such as the main grid connection or a three-phase PV inverter, the EM24 Ethernet's network connectivity offers a simple alternative to wiring an RS485 run back to the GX device.
