Intelligent Battery Management for 12V Lithium Systems

The Victron Smart BMS CL 12/100 provides sophisticated monitoring and protection for 12.8V Victron LiFePO4 (LFP) battery banks. Engineered specifically for mobile applications such as caravans, 4WDs, and marine vessels, this battery management system safely integrates your lithium auxiliary battery with your vehicle's alternator. It supports up to five batteries connected in parallel, offering scalable capacity for demanding off-grid energy requirements.

Protect Your Alternator from Overheating

One of the most significant risks when upgrading to lithium is alternator damage. Lithium batteries have low internal resistance and can draw massive currents, which often causes standard 12V alternators to overheat and fail if run at maximum output for extended periods. This smart BMS resolves this issue by electronically limiting the input current to approximately 90 percent of your chosen fuse rating. For instance, installing a 100A fuse restricts the maximum charge current to around 90A, ensuring your alternator remains within safe operating temperatures while efficiently charging your battery bank.

Starter Battery Isolation

Operating similarly to a Cyrix Battery Combiner, the BMS integrates dedicated starter battery protection. Charge current only flows to the lithium battery when the input voltage from the starter battery exceeds 13V. Furthermore, it strictly prevents any current from flowing backward from the lithium bank to the starter battery. This precise isolation protects your primary starting battery from excessive discharge, ensuring your vehicle is always ready to start.

Comprehensive Lithium Cell Protection

Maintaining the health of your LiFePO4 cells is critical for long-term performance. This system actively monitors cell voltages and temperatures, seamlessly regulating excessive input voltages down to safe levels. It features three distinct control outputs to manage your power system effectively:

  • Load Disconnect: Automatically disables loads (via a Battery Protect, inverter, or DC-DC converter) when cell voltage drops too low, preventing deep discharge.
  • Pre-Alarm: Provides an early warning signal before the load disconnect engages, allowing you to manually intervene or activate an indicator LED or buzzer.
  • Charge Disconnect: Instantly stops the charging process in the event of cell overvoltage or high temperatures, preventing permanent cell damage.

Wireless Monitoring and Safe Operation

With built-in Bluetooth connectivity, you can monitor system performance, adjust settings, and update firmware directly from your smartphone using the VictronConnect app. The unit also includes a dedicated remote on/off input, allowing you to easily control alternator charging without disabling the core BMS safety functions. Built for volatile environments, the system is fully ignition-proof, utilising solid-state MOSFET switches rather than traditional relays to eliminate the risk of sparking.
